Fisti’s God is in the Movies blogathon: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

God is done with your bulls–t, or The Heavenly Eyeroll

When Fisti first announced his blogathon, God is in the Movies, I was excited — is this my turn to talk my story about being a hardcore atheist, a confused satanist for a brief while at the age of 13, and finally becoming someone who thought religion was something really, really interesting (kudos, Supernatural with Castiel), but is .simply non-religious?

Well… no. Instead, I found Monty Python and the Holy Grail, laughed my ass off for one and a half hours and knew I have to take this post in a lighter tone. Morgan Freeman, step aside, there’s a new old kid on the block, and he’s funnier than anyone I’ve ever met.

God appears for only a short while in the film — to grace Arthur with a divine task, to find the Holy Grail. He appears in the sky for Arthur’s gang of brave and quite-not-as-brave knights, and just as proper believers, they begin to grovel. God rolls his eyes and tells them that they should chill and when they still can’t be cool, just this once, and avert their eyes, God tells them people grovel too much and that psalms are depressing… among other things. Obviously, this God isn’t down with how depressing Christianity is, which I can only count as a good thing.

Religion, or Christianity, is obviously apparent throughout the whole film, as it is King Arthur’s time. The nuns are horny and the knights are cowardly and religion gets mocked most of all, but the jokes stay on the hilarious side on the Funny/Offensive scale with humor that ages well (the film is from 1975) and absolutely nothing is to be taken seriously.

I guess that the end conclusion from the film is that God is fiction, but maybe all we can determine is that the God presented in the film was fiction. Or maybe that people are so full of humility when talking to God that he himself is tired of it?

Whatever the case is, thank you Fisti, for creating such a great blogathon!! The deadline’s tonight, so if you’ve got a bit of free time tonight, feel free to join us! 😉

  1. LOL – this movie is hilarious!

  2. I was totally prepared for a religious lashing after your first paragraph! LOL, I love that you took this in a lighter direction. It adds spice to the list of participating posts. I love this movie, and the last paragraph about God’s purpose in the film is great and shows yet another avenue that God can be discussed in film.

    Thanks again for participating!

  3. I am ashamed to admit I have never seen this. I think I should put it on my Blind Spot list next year.

  4. One of the greatest films ever. I just love it to death. Yet, hearing about Elvis Presley quoting that film makes it even funnier.

  5. Love this! Monty Python God is so sassy!

  6. I love this movie so much. Great pick.

I actually wrote something for this but never published it. It was silly…but somewhat similar to yours!
