The Ten: Most Iconic Movie Characters

Big Screen Small Words1 has dragged me out of my shameless solitude2 by passing me the relay in a very cool blogathon I’ve been eyeing from afar for some time now. All thanks to Nostra at MyFilmViews for creating this awesomesauce!

The rules are as follows: A list of 10 iconic movie characters has been made. That list will be assigned to another blogger who can then change it by removing one character (describing why they think it should not be on the list) and replace it with another one (also with motivation) and hand over the baton to another blogger. Once assigned that blogger will have to put his/her post up within a week. If this is not the case the blogger who assigned it has to reassign it to another blogger. After you have posted your update leave the link in the comments here and I will make sure it gets added to the overview post.

rocky balboa, indiana jones

and I’m replacing:

Sorry, Rocky. You are no competition to the creepiness that is Jack Torrance from The Shining, a film and a character who were iconic way before I saw it for myself. I don’t think I will ever forget this face or character. So I say that he well deserves a place on this list, as impossible as it is to create, because “iconic” is different for everyone.3 When I look at this list with Scarlett and 007 and Indiana Jones… Rocky Balboa might be iconic for sports films, but for all films? I feel like Johnny deserves this place more. As I say this, I really recommend for you to check out some others posts in this relay — it has evolved in a truly interesting way.

And with that, I’m passing on the relay to m.brown from Two Dollar Cinema!

Blogs that have participated:

1 Which, by the way, is an awesome blog that you should be reading already… 2 He he he hehe. Am I funny yet? 3 Well, I for one am a doofus with very little film knowledge, but I’m not afraid to flaunt my opinion around.

  1. Good to see you come out of your ‘Shameless’ binge to do this blogathon Elina 😉 Even without seeing The Shining, I could see his character being so iconic. I think Rocky is quite a cinema icon too though, perhaps more so than Buzz Lightyear though I LOVE that character.

    • I thought about it! But I haven’t seen any Toy Story movies AND I know he’s been added there twice, so I had to give that guy benefit of the doubt. 😀

Glad that you haven’t forgotten about me during my shameful absence, Ruth!

  2. Ah, thanks for including me in this. Solid pick with Jack, as that moment is truly iconic.

I think I know what movie I’m picking, just not sure what character, Turner or Hooch (sorry, that a very stupid joke). Anyway, I’m not sure who to take off. I think it’s going to be one of the ladies…which seems like a dick move.

Oh boy. This could be trouble.
    Thanks. Thanks a lot.

    • Are you kidding? I’ve been looking forward to your addition to this post ever since I saw this relay started. Oh, and psst — it’s bad taste to take off the character who was added latest. They’ve done it before, them bastards, but I–I might cry.

Oh, have fun with taking one out! My advice is to read through all the posts made before so that you can feel extra crappy about taking one of them down. You’re welcome!

      PS. Hooch.

      • Hey, I’m totally going to do this…it’s just gonna be another day or two. I’m assuming everyone else was prompt…

Well, except you in your alleged solitude.

  3. Great choice! I love a horror addition to the group!

  4. I once saw The Shining years ago, and didn’t quite understand it. Seeing that face again in this post makes me want to revisit the movie and read the book. This list was definitely a hard one to take out and replace characters – well deserved choice! 😀

    • I saw it just before New Year’s, so I was introduced to it very recently, but it really left a mark. It was the first horror film I’ve seen that was truly creepy, not just scary because of the jump scares etc. I really recommend you give it another chance!

Oh, yes, this list is impossible… I changed my mind about five times on who I’ll take out and decided on Rocky just before publishing, so I had to rewrite a part of this post just before. 😀

  5. Elina, I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m not a Rocky fan at all. Jack Torrance deserves to be on this list!

  6. Great swap. Rocky’s cool and all, but even with 6 flicks under his belt, he can’t touch the power of ol’ Jack.

  7. Yes! Jack! There needs to be more horror icons on this list. Great choice.
